October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Performing the Self Breast Exam

Test 4

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
We believe that self breast exams are an important part of breast cancer awareness.
Here's a graphic from WebMD, explaining how to perform your monthly self breast exam:

We recommend the monthly self breast exam, starting around age 20.  Checking your breasts regularly helps us to become familiar with the look and feel of our breasts, so that we will be aware of any changes that may occur.

The self breast exam is performed by using the fat pads of the fingertips to explore the content of our breasts.  A circular, wedge, or up-and-down pattern can be used, so long as your examining the entire area of the breasts and armpits.

It's best to check your breast following your menstrual period, so that hormonal changes leading up to your period (swelling, tenderness) are less present.  If you no longer have menstual periods, pick a certain day of each calendar month to remember to check your breasts.

Notify your healthcare provider with any changes, or areas of concern.
